A common complaint among my friends who work out regularly is the random body acne that appears after a particularly sweaty workout. This was a problem in the 17th century as well, and Sarah’s recipe box had a recipe in it that suggested wiping the affected area with witch hazel. Since witch hazel is an astringent with anti-inflammatory properties, it works really well on body blemishes. To update the recipe, the rose water adds a soothing element and the tea tree essential oil is a natural antibacterial compound. It’s also super easy to make and lasts until you use it up. Just make sure to shake the bottle before each use!

(For those of you new to this series, Sarah Munro is the heroine of ONE DARK WISH, book 2 in the Deadly Force romantic suspense series. Sarah is a historian who, on the side, is updating the botanical remedies she discovered while researching a young Puritan girl accused of witchcraft in 1699.)

Sarah Munro’s Body Blemish Spray

Ingredients:

2 ounces witch hazel

1 ounce rose water

15 drops tea tree essential oil

Directions:

Using a small funnel, combine the witch hazel, rose water, and tea tree oil in a 4-ounce glass spray bottle. Shake contents well and shake again before each use.

After showering, spray onto the affected area. Let dry completely before dressing.

Important disclaimer about wild plants, foraging, and making herbal remedies:

I am not a medical professional and nothing written on this blog is medical advice. None of my statements have been evaluated by the FDA (I am legally required to give you this disclaimer).

It is important to do your due diligence before foraging, harvesting, and/or consuming any type of medicinal plant.

  • If you are taking any medications, talk to your doctor about any potential drug interactions.
  • If you are allergic to anything, make sure whatever you are foraging is not in the same family. Example: While dandelions are typically considered safe, those who are allergic to ragweed, latex, daisies, or any other plants in the same or similar families, may not be able to consume dandelion.

Always research potential side effectsdosage recommendations, and how to properly prepare and consume each medicinal plant.

Always make sure you are foraging what you believe to be. Fully prepare and study the anatomy before harvesting wild plants.

Always make sure your kitchen/work area is clean and that all materials are sterilized.

Do not forage plants from areas that have been sprayed within the past 2 years at the very least.
