I sincerely hope that you are enjoying these last few weeks of summer. This month, here with The Romance Herbalist, Sarah Munro is sharing her recipes for lotions, balms, and soaps using her Dandelion-Infused Oil. (a 17th century recipe that Sarah, the heroine in ONE DARK WISH–book 2 in the Amazon bestselling Deadly Force Series–studied and edited for contemporary use.) And today Sarah is sharing how to make DIY dandelion lotion bars. They’re a great moisturizer for dry, sunburned skin as well as an antidote for those pesky late-summer bug bites. They’re easy to travel with when you hit the beach for that one last fling. 🙂
Sarah Munro’s Dandelion Lotion Bars
INGREDIENTS & SUPPLIES:
- 1/4 cup of coconut oil
- 2 teaspoons dandelion-infused oil
- 1/2 cup beeswax (available on Amazon and in health food stores)
- 1/4 cup shea butter (available on Amazon and in health food stores)
- 1 double boiler
- wooden spoon
- molds of your choice (I use clean ice cube trays)
DIRECTIONS:
- Place the double boiler over medium heat. In the double boiler, combine the coconut oil, dandelion-infused oil, beeswax, and shea butter.
- Using a wooden spoon, stir until all four ingredients are melted and combined. (this can take a while but just keep stirring for about 20-25 minutes.)
- Remove the double boiler from the heat and gently pour the hot lotion into the the freezer molds.
- Let the molds sit until completely cooled. This could take anywhere from 1-2 hours, depending on your molds.
- If the bars don’t release easily from the mold, put it into the freezer for about 10 minutes. They should then come out with no problem.
Important disclaimer about wild plants, foraging, and making herbal remedies:
I am not a medical professional and nothing written on this blog is medical advice. None of my statements have been evaluated by the FDA (I am legally required to give you this disclaimer).
It is important to do your due diligence before foraging, harvesting, and/or consuming any type of medicinal plant.
- If you are taking any medications, talk to your doctor about any potential drug interactions.
- If you are allergic to anything, make sure whatever you are foraging is not in the same family. Example: While dandelions are typically considered safe, those who are allergic to ragweed, latex, daisies, or any other plants in the same or similar families, may not be able to consume dandelion.
Always research potential side effects, dosage recommendations, and how to properly prepare and consume each medicinal plant.
Always make sure you are foraging what you believe to be. Fully prepare and study the anatomy before harvesting wild plants.
Always make sure your kitchen/work area is clean and that all materials are sterilized.
Do not forage plants from areas that have been sprayed within the past 2 years at the very least.
