The Windswept Writer

There’s a natural rhythm to creative work, and sometimes, you can feel when yours is shifting. For a long time, this space has been rooted in practical, helpful content. Craft posts. How-to guides. The kind of articles designed to answer questions, solve problems, and support the day-to-day work of writing and creative life. That isn’t going away. But it isn’t the whole picture anymore, either. Lately, I’ve felt the pull toward something quieter. Slower. A different kind of writing that doesn’t always fit neatly into a checklist or a tutorial. And that’s why I’m starting to write more over on The Windswept Writer on Substack.

Why I’m Writing More on The Windswept Writer (and What That Means Going Forward)

This shift isn’t about leaving one platform for another. It’s about creating room for a different voice. Here, the focus has often been on clarity and utility, on making things actionable, structured, easy to apply. Over on Windswept Writer, I want to lean into something more reflective. More essay than instruction. More exploration than explanation.

The kinds of pieces that follow a thought instead of organizing it. The ones that ask questions instead of answering them, like my Pennhurst series.

Meeting New Readers (and Inviting You Along)

There’s also something expansive about stepping into a new space. Different platforms bring different audiences. Different conversations. Different ways of connecting. Writing on Substack gives me the opportunity to meet readers who might not find their way here and to engage in a slightly different kind of dialogue.

If you’ve been reading for a while, nothing changes in terms of access. I’ll still be here. Still posting. But if you’re curious about the more personal, essay-style side of my writing, Windswept Writer is where that will live.

What You Can Expect There

The goal isn’t to replicate what already exists here. It’s to create something that complements it. These posts may feel a little less polished in a traditional sense and a little more honest in another. On Windswept Writer, you’ll likely see:

  • Essays about writing life and creative process
  • Reflections on storytelling, seasons, and creative cycles
  • Thoughts that don’t quite fit into a “how-to” structure
  • Pieces that are more atmospheric, more exploratory

A Slower, Intentional Rhythm

Another difference is frequency. Instead of trying to post often, the goal is to post consistently but sustainably, about once a week, likely on Thursdays. That rhythm leaves space for ideas to develop. It allows the writing to feel less reactive and more intentional. And honestly, it makes the process more enjoyable.

Why This Matters (At Least to Me)

As writers, it’s easy to fall into patterns that prioritize usefulness over curiosity. To write what we know will perform well. What’s easy to structure. What fits expectations. But part of staying creatively engaged is allowing room for the kind of writing that doesn’t have a clear outcome. The kind that exists simply because it wants to be written. That’s what Windswept Writer is for.

An Open Invitation

If you enjoy the practical side of writing—the systems, the tools, the craft—you’ll still find that here. If you’re interested in something a little more reflective, a little more wandering, a little more windswept, then I’d love to have you join me there too.

No pressure. No expectation. Just another place to write. And to meet you, perhaps, in a slightly different way.
